Recalls
Proterra Operation Company, Inc. (Proterra) is recalling certain 2017-2019 Catalyst transit buses. One or more battery packs may allow liquid to leak into and accumulate in the battery pack enclosure.
Proterra, Inc. (Proterra) is recalling certain 2017-2019 35 foot Catalyst E2, 2017-2019 40 foot E2, 2020-2021 35 foot RR, 2019-2020 40 foot RR, 2019-2022 40 foot ZX5, and 2020-2022 35 foot ZX5 buses. The plexus adhesive between the torque limiter plate and the bus body may be insufficient, causing the bolts that secure the steering gearbox to loosen.
Proterra Inc. (Proterra) is recalling certain 2018-2020 35 foot and 40 foot Catalyst buses. Lack of plexus adhesive between the torque plate and the vehicle chassis may cause the bolts securing the steering gear box to loosen.
Proterra, Inc. (Proterra) is recalling certain 2018-2019 Catalyst buses equipped with a certain batch of glass roof hatches. Temperature and vibration stresses may cause the tempered glass roof hatch to shatter.
Proterra, Inc. (Proterra) is recalling certain 2017-2018 Catalyst buses. The vehicles are equipped with swivel valves that may insufficiently protect the air brake system from an air leak between the service reservoir and the source of air pressure. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 121, "Air Brake Systems."
Proterra, Inc. (Proterra) is recalling certain 2015-2018 Catalyst 40 buses equipped with an optional tow fitting and airline that allows a tow truck to operate the rear brakes on the vehicle. The mesh cap covering the airline for the tow fitting can be clogged with road debris in inclement weather, possibly resulting in a build up of air pressure in the rear brake system.
Proterra Inc., (Proterra) is recalling certain 2015-2018 Catalyst 40 and 35 transit buses. The affected vehicles are equipped with a four point height control system that may cause a load imbalance, overloading the front tires.
Proterra Inc., (Proterra) is recalling certain 2015-2018 Catalyst 40 transit buses. The affected vehicles lack a Graham White air brake supply reservoir, possibly resulting in long term moisture build up in the air brake system. As a result, these vehicles fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 121, "Air Brake Systems."
Proterra, Inc is recalling certain 2015-2018 Catalyst 40, and Catalyst 35 buses. The certification label may list an incorrect gross front axle weight rating and/or incorrect tire pressures. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of 49 CFR Part 567, "Certification."

Service bulletins
What Proterra told its dealers about the 2018 Proterra Catalyst: known faults, fixes and updates.
| Bulletin | Summary |
|---|---|
| 11011320 | Service Bulletin for an alternative coolant temp sensor for transit buses as the original sensor installed is challenging to purchase due to supply constraints. |
| 11011233 | Repair instructions to support transit buses when a charge shunt fails. If the installed charge shunt were to fail we can replace with the original shunt installed, therefore this instruction set provides documentation for installing an alternative. |
| 11010998 | Service Bulletin for upgraded battery fans on select heavy duty electric buses. Moving to brushless fans to extend the service life of the fans. |
| 11010653 | Repair instructions for ADA ramp brackets that have come debonded due to water intrusion. |
| 11010630 | Instructions to add spacers to the aux heat tank to reduce stress acted on. |
| 11010425 | Bulletin to add shim under the steering TLP due to build variances of the bodies and bond gaps. |
| 11006606 | The procedure describes the process of updating the body controller to remove a 2.5 second delay to a door open request. |
| 10181013 | This procedure is a updates the rooftop battery thermal management system unit brackets to a more robust design. |
| 10179591 | This retrofit changes the traction motor inverter enable signal from 12 to 24 volts to improve reliability. |
| 10178211 | This retrofit removes an unnecessary bleed line in the coolant system that may lead to air entrapment and reduced efficiency of the cooling system. |
| 10178210 | This retrofit removes an unnecessary bleed line in the coolant system that may lead to air entrapment and reduced efficiency of the cooling system. |
| 10178209 | This retrofit adds reflective tape to the front of the bus to comply with California state regulations. |
| 10174830 | This procedure upgrades the rear flip up seat mount to a more robust design. |
| 10168950 | This campaign updates the Grayson battery thermal management system to the latest version for improved performance. |
| 10164634 | This retrofit removes the 5-Position door switch and replaces it with individual front and rear door switches. |
| 10164633 | The reason for this software update is to update various controllers. All the included Proterra Catalyst E2 vehicles require a change to the software/configuration for the following items: Battery Pack Software, Charge Controller, ESM Software, Powertrain Controller, DWP/Dash Software, and Body Controller (ZR) |
| 10164631 | The reason for this software update is to update various controllers. All the included Proterra Catalyst E2 vehicles require a change to the software/configuration for the following items: Battery Pack Software, Charge Controller, ESM Software, Powertrain Controller, DWP/Dash Software, and Body Controller (ZR) |
| 10164630 | This retrofit installs a resistor in parallel with the ADA Alarm to prevent it from sounding when the ADA Ramp is not deployed. |
| 10163631 | Pin placement in the dash DMUXK connector was incorrect and caused the ICAN network to be improperly terminated. Proterra issued this service bulletin to relocate the pin to properly terminate the ICAN network. |
| 10163629 | A software error was causing a false state of charge calculation, shutting off the DC to DC converter, causing the low voltage batteries to lose charge. Loss of power to the low voltage battery could cause ancillary systems in the vehicle to turn off. Proterra issued this service bulletin to update the software that will make SOC calculations more accurate and prevent loss of power to the low voltage system. |
| 10163628 | The brackets and latches on 40ft Catalyst buses holding the lid on the clamshell covering rooftop components can come loose, possibly causing the lid to open. An open lid on a moving vehicle could become damaged or in an extreme case disconnected, possibly causing a hazard on the road. Proterra issued the service bulletin to replace the clamshell brackets and latches with an improved design. |
| 10163624 | Voltage sags are causing the datalogger to reset, losing data used for monitoring and servicing the vehicles. Proterra issued this service bulletin to add a diode that will prevent voltage sags and loss of data. |
| 10163623 | The brackets and latches holding the lid on the 35ft Catalyst E2 clamshell covering rooftop components can come loose, possibly causing the lid to open. An open lid on a moving vehicle could become damaged or in an extreme case disconnected, possibly causing a hazard on the road. Proterra issued the service bulletin to replace the clamshell brackets and latches with an improved design. |
| 10163619 | Due to a wiring harness change, the cord grip on the power steering motor is the wrong size, which could allow water to leak into the motor wiring junction box, causing the power steering motor to stop working. Proterra issued this service bulletin to replace the cord grip with one with that has a water-tight fit. |
| 10162415 | This procedure changes the wiring for the radiator for improved reliability. |
