Fatal crashes in the US
From 2020 to 2023, 261 GSX-R1000 vehicles were involved in crashes on US public roads in which someone died, and 255 people died inside them. These are counts, not crash rates: a model with more cars on the road shows up more often, and people killed outside the vehicle are not counted here.

EU safety alerts
Safety Gate, the European Union's rapid alert system, names the GSX-R1000 in 3 alerts. European versions can differ from the North American car.
Due to incorrect sealing of the fuel pump fitting on the fuel tank, the O-ring on the fuel pump may be twisted. As a consequence, fuel may leak from the fuel tank.
If an excessive load is applied to the powertrain while changing gears, the drive chain could come off or break. This would result in the motorcycle suddenly losing power.
Corrosion in the brake system may generate gas which may not be adequately purged from the master cylinder.

Recalls
7 campaigns cover the GSX-R1000.
Suzuki Motor of America, Inc. (Suzuki) is recalling certain 2017-2018 Suzuki DL650A, DL650XA, GSX-R1000, GSX-R1000R, and 2018 GSX-S750 motorcycles. During installation, the fuel pump O-ring may have been twisted, reducing the sealing performance and possibly resulting in a fuel leak.
Suzuki Motor of America, Inc. (Suzuki) is recalling certain 2017-2018 GSX-R1000, GSX-R1000A, GSX-R1000RA, and GSX-R1000RZA motorcycles. When upshifting between first and second gear, if the rider fails to engage second gear, a neutral condition will exist and may cause very high engine RPM. If the rider then shifts into second gear without disengaging the clutch, the motorcycles chain may stretch or break.
Suzuki Motor of America, Inc. (Suzuki) is recalling certain model year 2011-2014 GSX-R750 and 2009-2014 GSX-R1000 motorcycles. If a gear is missed while upshifting, the strain applied to the drive chain after the next shift may cause the rear axle to move, damaging the left-side drive chain adjuster.
Suzuki Motor of America, Inc. (Suzuki) is recalling certain model year 2004-2013 GSX-R600 and GSX-R750, and model year 2005-2013 GSX-R1000 motorcycles. In combination with older brake fluid, corrosion of the brake piston inside of the front brake master cylinder generates gas that may result in a reduction of fluid pressure transmission to the front brake.
SUZUKI IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2012 GSX-R1000 MOTORCYCLES. DUE TO LOOSE BOLTS THE SIDE STAND INTERLOCK SWITCH MAY FAIL.
AMERICAN SUZUKI (SUZUKI) IS CONDUCTING A SAFETY IMPROVEMENT CAMPAIGN INVOLVING 26,082 MY 2005-2006 GSX-R1000 MOTORCYCLES. CRACKING OR BREAKAGE OF THE MOTORCYCLE FRAME CAN OCCUR IN CERTAIN EXTREME SITUATIONS WHERE UNUSUALLY HIGH STRESS IS PLACED ON THE FRAME. REPEATED HARD LANDINGS FROM HAZARDOUS MANEUVERS SUCH AS EXTREME OR EXTENDED WHEELIES OR OTHER STUNTS MAY GENERATE SUFFICIENT STRESS TO CAUSE THIS PROBLEM.
ON CERTAIN MOTORCYCLES, EACH TIME THE IGNITION SWITCH IS TURNED OFF, THE ENGINE CONTROL MODULE (ECM) PRE-SETS THE POSITION OF THE IDLE SPEED CONTROL (ISC) VALVE FOR SUBSEQUENT ENGINE STARTING BY OPENING THE VALVE COMPLETELY AND THEN CLOSING IT TO A START-UP POSITION.
