Fatal crashes in the US
From 2020 to 2023, 21 M4 vehicles were involved in crashes on US public roads in which someone died, and 10 people died inside them. These are counts, not crash rates: a model with more cars on the road shows up more often, and people killed outside the vehicle are not counted here.

| Fuel | Cars | On the road | WLTP | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Petrol | 4,448 | 13.2 | 10.0 | +31% |
Litres per 100 km: total fuel used divided by total distance driven, from the car's own fuel consumption meter (OBFCM), collected in 2024 by the manufacturers, mostly remotely, and by national authorities. WLTP figures are the type-approval CO₂ values converted to litres. Hybrids, including mild hybrids, do not plug in; plug-in hybrid figures include the distance driven on electricity. Defective hydraulic unit of the braking system may cause a limited braking support and increased braking distance. Moreover, in such cases the ABS system would not be available. This will lead to increased risk of an accident.
The fuel injectors may not have been equipped with a decoupling element. This could result in a vibration fracture at the soldering point of the high-pressure fuel rail.Consequently, fuel could leak into the engine compartment, increasing the risk of fire.
The knee airbags may be defective. This could lead to inadequate inflation of the knee airbags in the event of an accident, increasing the risk of injury.
The bolt on the outside of the seat mechanism of both front seats may not have been properly secured. If the bolt comes loose, the seat can move backwards in the event of a rear-end collision accident, which would increase the risk of injury to the occupants.
The side, head and knee protection airbags of the front passenger seat may not work. This could increase the risk of injury to the occupant in the event of an accident.
The bolts of the rear-axle support may potentially not have been replaced in the course of the replacement of the rear-axle differential. The bolts might loosen over time. This could result in impaired driving performance.
